Purchase protection covers new items against accidental damage or theft for a short window after you buy them, typically 90 to 120 days. Extended warranty protection adds time, often one year, to the manufacturer’s warranty and covers defects and breakdowns. One protects you from accidents right after purchase, and the other from things breaking down later. Many cards include both, with very different limits.
How do purchase protection and extended warranty compare? #
| Purchase protection | Extended warranty | |
|---|---|---|
| What it covers | Accidental damage and theft | Defects and mechanical failure |
| When | A short window after purchase (often 90 to 120 days) | After the manufacturer’s warranty ends |
| Typical length | 90 to 120 days | Often +1 year |
| Limits | Per item and per year, varies widely | Usually up to the price you paid, within card caps |
| Typical proof | Receipt, card statement, photos, police report for theft | Receipt, card statement, original warranty, repair estimate |
What does credit card purchase protection cover? #
If you drop, crack or have stolen something you bought with the card, purchase protection can repair it, replace it or reimburse you, up to the card’s limit. Two Chase examples checked in September 2026:
- Chase Sapphire Reserve: 120 days from purchase against damage or theft, up to $10,000 per item (Chase).
- Chase Freedom Flex: 120 days against damage or theft, up to $500 per item (90 days for New York residents) (Chase).
The gap between those limits is why it matters which card you use for a $1,500 laptop.
Common exclusions include:
- Items lost with no sign of theft (“mysterious disappearance”)
- Vehicles and their parts
- Perishables, plants and animals
- Normal wear and tear
- Items left unattended in public places
Coverage is often secondary. If homeowner’s or renter’s insurance covers the item, the card may pay only what that policy doesn’t, such as your deductible. Your Guide to Benefits spells out how your card handles it.
What does credit card extended warranty cover? #
Extended warranty picks up where the manufacturer’s warranty ends. If a TV with a one-year warranty dies in month 18, the card’s benefit can pay for the repair.
The Chase Freedom Flex, for example, adds one year to eligible U.S. manufacturer warranties of three years or less, up to four years from the date of purchase. Other cards accept longer original warranties. The usual requirements:
- The item came with a manufacturer’s written warranty
- You paid for it with the card (some cards allow part-payment with points)
- The original warranty falls within the card’s limit on length
It doesn’t cover accidental damage, cosmetic problems, or items without a manufacturer’s warranty.
Which card should you use for a big purchase? #
Phones, cameras, headphones and anything portable: prioritize strong purchase protection. The first few months are when things get dropped or stolen.
Appliances, TVs and computers: prioritize extended warranty. These fail after the factory warranty runs out more often than they get stolen.
Everything: check whether the purchase earns a bonus category too. Protection and rewards both come from the same swipe.
That’s two different questions to answer at the register, and most people don’t remember their cards’ benefit limits. Credit Card Central has a notes field on every card, so you can record “purchase protection $10,000/item, 120 days” on the right one and find it with the app’s search. The Which Card? screen then ranks your cards by reward rate for the category you’re buying in.
How to file a claim under either benefit #
- Check the deadline. Guides set a window to report the incident and a later one for documents. Missing either can void the claim.
- Gather the basics: itemized receipt, card statement showing the charge, and the manufacturer’s warranty for warranty claims.
- Add proof of what happened: photos of damage, a police report for theft, or a repair diagnosis for a failure.
- File with the benefits administrator listed in your Guide to Benefits. Visa and Mastercard cards often use a third-party administrator. Amex handles its own claims.
- Keep the item until the claim is paid. The administrator may ask you to send it in.
Phone damage often falls under a separate cell phone protection benefit instead. We cover that in how to file a cell phone protection claim. Frequently asked questions #
Do these benefits apply if I paid with points? #
It depends on the card. Some cover items paid in part with points, as long as the card was charged for part of the price. Others require the full price on the card. Check your Guide to Benefits before assuming.
Does purchase protection cover items I lose? #
Usually not. Most purchase protection covers theft and accidental damage, and treats items simply lost with no sign of theft as excluded. A few cards cover more, so read your terms.
Are refurbished or open-box items covered by extended warranty? #
Often not, unless they come with a manufacturer’s warranty. Some guides accept a manufacturer-backed refurbished warranty. Third-party seller warranties typically don’t qualify.
Are gifts covered? #
Many cards extend purchase protection and extended warranty to gifts you bought with the card. The claim still runs through you as the cardholder, so keep the receipt.
